The shortest night of the year is certainly one to be enjoyed to the max. The “Nit de Sant Joan”, as the people of Ibiza and Formentera call it, puts on a multitude of cultural and leisure activities for everyone. Each district has a comprehensive cultural programme for residents and tourists that includes concerts and food; depending on your location, you can enjoy typical bonfires on the beach and other recreational activities with a local flavour if you head inland. If you still don’t have anything in mind, here’s a summary of the programmes at the three beaches in the district of Ibiza: Talamanca, Ses Figueres and Figueretes. Are you ready for a magical night?
“Foguerons” and “torrades”: a truly original plan
The Eve of Saint John, also known as the Revetlla de Sant Joan (23 June), is popular for its “foguerons” and “torrades”, in other words, its impromptu bonfires and barbeques on many of Ibiza’s beaches. The three beaches in the district of Ibiza—Talamanca, Ses Figueres and Figueretes—are the most popular spots for residents and tourists. Unlike previous years, this year a sustainable and responsible festival is being encouraged: no glass or unsupervised bonfires shall be permitted on the beaches. However, aside from the organisational aspect—this year the authorities and neighbourhood associations are putting holes in the sand to mark out the bonfire areas and they’ll even distribute 400 kilos of fire wood—Ibiza has arranged an official programme of events with concerts, food and lights.
Talamanca and Ses Figueres
The activities at both beaches, which are close to one another and have views of the walled city, start at 20:30. In addition to a lively, family-oriented atmosphere, you’ll find plenty of fire and different food stalls, like the popular sangria and fritters stand in Ses Figueres. In addition, this small beach, an extension of Talamanca, is also holding a concert by Contra Band at 21:30. The activities on Talamanca beach begin by sharing a typical dish, macarrons de Sant Joan (a local pasta dish), followed by a concert by Ricardito and Los Latinos.
Figueretes and the final flourish to the evening
When it comes to the little ones, Figueretes beach is holding workshops, games and special children’s entertainment from 19:00. This beach is also getting on board with the local Macarrons de Sant Joan initiative, plus it will also feature music from DJ Alex Hinohouse. The final flourish, just like every other year, will be the fireworks at midnight seen from the three beaches and let off at Figueretes beach.
