Surely you’ve heard of a magical islet off the coast of Ibiza, which emerges from the sea in an imposing way and with special powers … is the islet of Es Vedrá is one of the essential in your visit to Ibiza and you can not miss it!

Es Vedrá is part of a group of islets that are a protected natural area since 2002 and form the Natural Reserves of Es Vedrà, Es Vedranell and the islets of Poniente. It is a protected maritime-terrestrial natural area located in the west of Eivissa, in the municipality of Sant Josep de Sa Talaia.

The islets are concentrated in two groups, on the one hand, there is the group formed by Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell and on the other hand, the islets of Poniente, called Sa Conillera, S’illa des Bosc, S’Espartar and Ses Bledes: Na Gorra, Es Vaixell, Na Bosc, Els esculls d’en Ramon and Na Plana. They are protected as natural areas because they have a great variety of fauna and flora, such as the protected Pitiusas lizard, which is distinguished by its size and coloration. The seabed also abounds with the endemic species of the Mediterranean, the Posidonia oceanica.

In addition, these islets have many plant species and the seabed has a rich and varied fauna, including mural dolphins.

Es Vedra stands out among all the islands for its height, with 382 meters at the Migjorn peak, and its steep orography makes it a unique landscape. The rest of the islets have elements that increase its attractiveness, such as its vegetation and some imposing cliffs like those of S’Espartar and Sa Conillera.

Es Vedrá is easily visible and recognizable from many points of Ibiza, Formentera and even from the Iberian Peninsula. In addition, the magical islet of Es Vedrà is owned by some thirty families who, given the impossibility of building or carrying out any kind of economic activity there, for many years there was an important colony of goats, one of the few animals that can adapt to the orography of the rocky islet, which has been taken as a popular legend.

Es Vedrá has served as inspiration for artists and photographers, as well as its appearance in films such as the legendary ‘More’ by Barbet Schroeder and on the cover of an album by the brilliant Mike Oldfield, to whom Es Vedrà served as inspiration for the album.

Es Vedra can not be visited on foot, it is totally forbidden, but you can see it from different points of the island that we tell you below, although, if you have the opportunity to do it by boat, it is highly recommended. Cala d’Hort is the easiest place since the islet is located right in front of this beach and has a breathtaking view of Es Vedrá.

Another point is the Torre de Es Savinar, which is reached on foot after a long walk. The beginning of the route is on a paved track (with Torre del Pirata sign) that leaves the road from Sant Josep (Es Cubells) to Cala d’Hort or PMV-803-1, north of the Serra des Graner.

If long walks are not your thing, there are also several viewpoints between the tower and Cala d’Hort that will also allow you to see Es Vedrá. But if you like complicated paths in order to conquer the reward of exceptional views that few get, we recommend the viewpoint of Cap Llentrisca.

There are many myths surrounding the islet and it is considered a magical place with special powers; some books report testimonies of fishermen who, while fishing in the area, saw lights coming in and out of the water, and even saw them pass under their boats. Some divers also claim to have heard powerful metallic sounds underwater.

Some researchers of paranormal phenomena have claimed that there could be something similar to the Bermuda Triangle, where ships would be lost due to unexplained failures in navigation devices. They say that the triangle would be formed by Es Vedrá, the southwest coast of Mallorca and the Peñón de Ifach in Alicante. On the other hand, it is supposed that the magnetic radiation of Es Vedra can be compared with the stones of Stonehenge, the pyramids of Egypt and the statues of Easter Island.

If you like this kind of stories, you should know that there is a story that tells of the existence of a giant monster, Gegant des Vedrá, which prevented anyone from approaching so it could eat all the octopuses in the waters bordering the islet.

After a day full of unique experiences, surely you have been invaded by the spirit of Es Vedrá and now you will need a well-deserved rest. For this, we suggest any of the best hotels on the island for its excellent value for money, where you can dream of the images of Es Vedra and recharge your batteries.
