You’ll most likely have heard of the famous hippy markets in Ibiza and you’ll already have added them to your list of places to visit. They are, in fact, one of the most important attractions on the island, as they have managed to preserve their artistic roots inherited from the start of the 60s, when a good group of painters, designers and craftspeople came to Ibiza in search of its striking light, unique atmosphere and freedom of expression.
The island has many traditional markets for you to visit, some of them are only open in summer and others are there all year round.
Here’s the calendar for the most important ones:
- Las Dalias, a hippy market since 1954
When: Every Saturday, 10AM to 8PM, April to October. Night market: Mondays and Tuesdays, 7PM to 1AM, June to September.
Where: Sant Carles, in the north of the island.
The second largest market in Ibiza, as you stroll through it you’ll feel like you’ve travelled to another period of time. It exudes the freshness, freedom and hippy dream of the 1960s. And its items ooze that vibe. The sale of handmade products, fashion items and accessories by local designers is one of its highlights.
It’s also a meeting point for people who want to enjoy music and food from different parts of the world. It has a restaurant, several bars, a fresh juice stand and gazebo where you can enjoy tea and sweet treats. In the afternoon, visitors gather at the Soul Bar to listen to a DJ session until the market closes.
- Sant Jordi, the second-hand goods market
When: Every Saturday, 9AM to 3PM.
Where: In Sant Jordi, in the south of the island.
It’s a favourite among residents with a truly local and cosmopolitan hippy vibe. Practically everything you find there is second-hand like clothes, jewellery, books, cosmetics… you’ll be surprised by what people end up selling!
At noon you simply have to have a drink at the bar and soak up the atmosphere with percussionists on their bongo drums—jam sessions that are totally worthwhile!
- Punta Arabí hippy market
When: Every Wednesday, 10AM to 7PM, April to October.
Where: In Es Canar, in the grounds of Club Punta Arabí.
Ibiza’s biggest and oldest market. Countless stands pitched under the pine trees sell all manner of items from all four corners of the globe, many of which are handmade. A vibrant atmosphere where you’ll come across several bars and restaurants with live drums and music as entertainment.
- Sant Joan market
When: Every Sunday. 10AM to 4PM.
Where: Sant Joan Labritja
Even though it’s fairly new, this hippy market has gained significant interest because of its charming setting, since it’s completely incorporated into the streets of the beautiful village of Sant Joan. You’ll find small works of art sold by their authors, all kinds of handmade objects, photographs and typical Ibizan produce at this market.
The music kicks off at 12:30PM and many of its stands sell food. A beer in the sun as you listen to music is a great plan for a Sunday, isn’t it?
